KTAS는 의학적인 관점뿐만 아니라 아동 혹은 노인 학대 등과 같은 사회 문제까지 포함된 종합적인 관점에서 분류하여 각 환자에게 최상의 의료 서비스를 제공하는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다. 이를 위해 KTAS는 분류담당자가 다루기 쉬운 형식으로, 의료 현실을 최대한 반영할 수 있도록 지속해서 개정되어야 합니다. 또한 그에 따른 분류담당자 양성 교육자료 개정도 필요합니다. 2012년도에 KTAS가 개발되고 2016년부터 전국의 응급의료기관에 적용되면서 분류담당자들에게 많은 경험이 축적되었고 워크샵이나 웹사이트를 통한 질의/응답, 그리고 캐나다의 CTAS 개정내용 및 관련 학술 연구 자료 등을 반영하여 2021년 새로운 KTAS와 교육 자료를 개발하게 되었습니다. 현재 대한응급의학회에서는 보건복지부로부터 권한을 위임받아 본 학회 산하에 KTAS 위원회를 구성하고 병원 단계 및 병원 전 단계를 포괄하는 KTAS 교육과 질 관리를 담당하고 있습니다. 이 책을 이용한 KTAS 교육으로 분류담당자들의 전문성이 향상되어, 환자에게 적절한 의료서비스를 제공하고 효율적인 응급의료체계의 기초를 다지는 계기가 되기를 바랍니다.

22쇄를 인쇄할 때까지 PEM 자체에 대한 정리를 못한 점이 아쉬워서 한정판으로 정리를 하고 신판 작업을 시작하려고 합니다. 1999년도로 기억합니다. IMF 여파가 아직 남아 있고, 병원의 모기업이 어려워졌다고 분위기는 어수선했던 것 같으나, 저는 전공의 2년차로 ER normal ora라는 소리를 들으면서 하루살이 삶을 살고 있었습니다. 기억력은 부실하고, 환자는 몰아치고, 2,000페이지가 넘는 책을 넘기면서 영어로 된 교과서의 내용 중에 내게 필요한 정보를 알아내는 것은 매우 어려 웠습니다. 선배님들은 훌륭하셔서 물어보는 것의 핵심을 바로 얘기해주셨으나, 묻는 것도 한계가 있어서 그냥 무작정 정리를 하기 시작했습니다. 그리고 미국에서 날라온 작은 핸드 북을 발견하고, 일단 베끼기 시작하여 400여 페이지의 내 매뉴얼이 되었고, 그걸 보신 지나 가던 출판사 영업부장님의 출판을 권유하는 말에 더운 여름날 갑자기 일이 시작이 되어 2년여의 한글화, 추가 작업을 완성하여 매우 부끄러웠지만 출판을 결심하게 되었습니다. 그리고 군의관 근무하면서 2판을 준비했습니다. 그 당시에는 1.44 메가바이트의 플로피 디스크에 저장을 했기 때문에 사진은 넣을 수가 없어서 스캔하여 출판사에 종이로 들고 갔고, 후배 들이 똑똑하여 이것저것 도와주고 자료도 주었습니다. 이 메일은 아직 부실하여 자료를 주고 받기가 어려웠습니다. 지금과 비교하면 정말 많은 부분이 부족했으나, 아날로그로 주고 받고, 만나서 얘기를 하는 것은 지금보다는 많이 느렸지만 좋았던 것 같습니다.
